Haute Couture: Ren Chunmei

The Tang Dynasty in Paris

At Paris Fashion Week 2026, Chinese designer Ren Chunmei brings the heritage of the Tang Dynasty into dialogue with the extravagance of contemporary haute couture. Blending history, love, architecture and imperial symbols, “A Dream Across the Tang Dynasty” transforms the memory of the past into a new vision of fashion.

On October 2, 2026, in the historic setting of La Galerie Bourbon, Ren Chunmei’s silhouettes seem to traverse the centuries. Beneath the classical columns of this Parisian mansion, silks, embroidery, sheer fabrics and volumes inspired by Tang China come together in a spectacle where two cultural worlds meet.

For this new collection, the designer unveils 41 entirely hand-crafted pieces, conceived as a journey into the heart of one of the brightest periods of Chinese civilization: the High Tang.

But Ren Chunmei does not seek to turn history into a museum. She wants to bring it back to life.

An Era of Passion and Romanticism

To understand “A Dream Across the Tang Dynasty”, one must first understand what fascinates Ren Chunmei about this period.

For the designer, the Tang represent one of the most passionate and romantic periods in Chinese civilization. A period marked by extraordinary cultural vitality, but also by profound historical upheavals.

This passionate dimension can be found in the great stories that have endured through the centuries. Among them, the story of Yang Guifei and the Tang emperor Xuanzong holds a special place in the Chinese imagination.

Imperial love, beauty, power, passion and tragedy: their story becomes, through Ren Chunmei’s eyes, a source of inspiration for exploring the emotional dimension of clothing.

The designer is as interested in the splendor of the Tang as she is in its contradictions. Prosperity and refinement coexist with political upheavals and the An Lushan Rebellion. This tension between grandeur and fragility, beauty and tragedy fuels the aesthetic of the collection.

When History Becomes Fashion

In her work, Ren Chunmei does not reproduce historical costumes identically. She draws on their codes, transforms them and projects them into the present.

Ancient garments, artisanal techniques, frescoes, architecture and symbols of Chinese civilization become true elements of a visual language.

The dragon, an emblematic figure of power and imperial culture, is notably a major source of inspiration. References to Chinese architecture are also reinterpreted in spectacular silhouettes, sometimes almost theatrical.

Here, extravagance becomes a means of expression.

Amplified volumes, precious details, plays of transparency, embroidery and relief give the silhouettes an almost sculptural presence. The garment no longer merely dresses the body: it tells the story of a civilization, an era and a memory.

Bringing Tradition into Today’s Life

Perhaps this is where Ren Chunmei’s uniqueness lies.

For more than ten years, the designer has explored China’s clothing heritage in order to translate it into a contemporary language. Her approach consists in drawing from history what can still resonate with our time: forms, craftsmanship, symbols and, above all, aesthetic memory.

For her, tradition should not remain a frozen historical narrative. Through clothing, it should be able to reclaim its place in contemporary life and aesthetics.

This philosophy reflects a more personal conviction of the designer: a garment should go beyond the body to touch the emotions.

Wearing a creation inspired by Chinese heritage therefore does not simply mean wearing a historical reference. It also means bringing that history to life in another way, in a contemporary world.

When History Becomes Material

With “A Dream Across the Tang Dynasty”, Ren Chunmei champions a vision of fashion in which heritage becomes a living material, capable of reinventing itself in the present.

At a time when designers are looking for new stories to tell, culture, craftsmanship and traditional know-how constitute essential sources of inspiration. But the challenge is no longer simply to look to the past: it is to know how to make it engage in dialogue with the present.

From Shaanxi to Paris, Ren Chunmei thus transforms the memory of ancient dynasties into contemporary silhouettes. Embroidery, materials, volumes and traditional symbols all become ways of telling a story differently.

Her message is ultimately simple: tradition does not need to remain frozen in order to be preserved.

It can be embroidered, sculpted, transformed, reinvented and, above all, worn.

In Paris, the Tang are therefore no longer merely a page of history. They become an attitude, a silhouette and a new way of telling the story of China through fashion.

The Movement and the Material

Beyond the historical inspiration and the richness of the cultural references, another dimension of the collection stands out on the runway: movement and material.

Ren Chunmei’s haute couture fully comes to life when the silhouettes begin to move. Silk catches the light, volumes unfold, transparency plays with shadows, and embroidered details appear differently with every step. The historical references then leave behind their heritage dimension to become fully contemporary silhouettes.

Perhaps this is the true strength of “A Dream Across the Tang Dynasty”: turning heritage not into a frozen memory, but into a living material — a material to dream with, create with and, above all, wear.

This approach particularly caught the attention of the audience attending the show, who were captivated by the visual richness and boldness of the creations.

Bruno Nahan, president of BUGIS and president of the French Federation of Knitting, Lingerie and Swimwear, highlighted the strength of the dialogue between Chinese tradition and contemporary creation:

“I found it truly beautiful, both surprising and extremely bold. What I particularly appreciated was the way Ren Chunmei takes the mythologies and great emblematic figures of Chinese tradition and history and completely reinterprets them.

She succeeds in bringing them back to life through very contemporary, almost poetic fabrics. It is precisely this contrast that moved me so much.”

Among the silhouettes that particularly stood out to him, Bruno Nahan notably mentions the work around the cloud, which seems to float above a long dress:

“I particularly loved the way the cloud was reinterpreted, seeming to float above the long dress. It is very light, very airy, almost suspended. There is something very poetic and, at the same time, very impressive about this silhouette.”

The collection is more akin to a poetic reinterpretation, a way of bringing more than a thousand years of history into dialogue with contemporary creation.

What is your main source of inspiration for this collection?

The Tang represent an extremely rich period in Chinese history. It was an era of grandeur, poetry, passion and romanticism.

I drew inspiration from the atmosphere of the High Tang, but also from the upheavals of this period and the profound transformations of society.

The story of Yang Guifei and Emperor Xuanzong also greatly interested me. It is a love story that has become legendary, but it also evokes beauty, power, passion and tragedy. All these elements constitute, for me, particularly powerful material for creation.

What characterizes this new collection?

I wanted to incorporate the clothing, artisanal techniques and aesthetic memory of Chinese history into contemporary creation. I do not simply want to reproduce the past.

I also draw on numerous Chinese references, particularly architecture, the dragon and various traditional symbols.

But I want to approach them through a contemporary, sometimes even extravagant expression. My goal is to transform these elements so that they become something new when worn today.

I want people to be able to recognize their Chinese origins while discovering a new, free and contemporary expression.
