Witnessing the Paris of the 19th century, the 1200 drinking fountains in the city serve as both functional objects and contemporary creations, contributing to the urban and historical heritage of Paris. Taking a walk through the city allows us to explore the intersection between its rich historical heritage and the new ecological challenges it faces.
The Wallace Fountain
The Wallace fountains are adorned with four caryatids that encourage passersby to quench their thirst. They are named after an Englishman, Sir Richard Wallace, who donated them to the city in 1872. The Wallace fountains are much more than just sources of water; they are symbols of generosity, art, and a commitment to the well-being of the people of Paris.
Their presence in the city for over a century and a half testifies to their cultural and social significance while providing Parisians and visitors convenient access to quality drinking water. Today, there are over a hundred Wallace fountains in Paris.
The Wallace Fountain on Rue du Temple is equipped with an invisible misting system, offering a refreshing experience to passersby. The area has recently been pedestrianized and enhanced with greenery, providing a Belle Époque aesthetic.

The Stravinsky Fountain
The Stravinsky Fountain, also known as the Fountain of Automata, is located near the Centre Pompidou. It was created in 1983 by sculptors Jean Tinguely and Niki de Saint Phalle as a tribute to the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. The fountain is adorned with sixteen moving sculptures that represent Stravinsky’s works. The Stravinsky Fountain has become one of the most photographed fountains in Paris and is appreciated by both residents and visitors alike.

The Sparkling Fountain
Craving bubbles? Paris made a pioneering move as the first city in France to introduce free sparkling water at its public fountains. The initiative began in 2010 with the installation of the first sparkling water fountain in the Jardin de Reuilly, and has since expanded to include a total of 17 sparkling fountains across the city. These fountains offer residents and visitors the opportunity to enjoy high-quality sparkling water, providing a refreshing and sustainable alternative to bottled beverages.

The Fountain of the Innocents
The Fountain of the Innocents is an iconic monument in the Les Halles neighborhood of Paris, dating back to the 1500s. This remarkable work of French Renaissance is adorned with scenes and mythological creatures.
The recent restoration of the fountain, completed in June 2024, has restored its splendor, offering an exceptional opportunity to discover the five nymph bas-reliefs sculpted by Jean Goujon, which had been removed from the monument during the works.

Meeting with
Ariel Weil,
the Mayor of Central Paris

What is your favorite place in Central Paris?
It is difficult to answer that question because Central Paris is filled with beautiful places. It contains nearly 80% of the most stunning sights in Paris. When it comes to churches, Notre-Dame, Saint-Germain-l’Auxerrois, and Saint-Eustache are incredible, each with its own remarkable features. Fountains can be found throughout the area, and the Seine offers splendid views with its bridges, which are true works of art. Ultimately, the entire neighborhood is beautiful.
Is it the neighborhood of your grandparents?
My grandparents arrived in France after the war as survivors of concentration camps. Like many poor migrants, they settled in this neighborhood, which was then a place of welcome for very impoverished immigrants. My mother grew up here, and when I was little, I often visited my grandparents, spending a lot of time at their home. I even bought the apartment they rented throughout their lives. Now, I live there with my family, and my children attend the same public schools as my mother did. We are proud to say that we have four generations in this neighborhood.
So, you know this neighborhood well?
It was my childhood neighborhood. I have frequented it since I was born, and I know all its aspects. When I walk on Rue des Rosiers, there are still old shopkeepers who pinch my cheeks, having known me since I was little, and who make me little cakes when I pass by. So, I have quite an intimate knowledge of this neighborhood. However, Central Paris has a history that goes back centuries. I spend a lot of time at the Carnavalet Museum, the Museum of the History of Paris, to discover all the facets of the city.
What do you want to do in this neighborhood?
What excites me the most in life is creating. Creating squares and gardens is something extraordinary. I have had the opportunity to create several squares and gardens in Central Paris. My fundamental goal is to preserve, clean, and cherish our heritage while ensuring that it is not just a museum but a vibrant place where people live. This involves building social housing and improving schools and nurseries. The area is frequented by a diverse range of people, both in terms of age and social background. My project is to beautify this place, which I believe is the most beautiful in the world.
