On April 16, 2026, the Paris headquarters of UNESCO hosted the celebration of United Nations Chinese Language Day.
Marking the fifth anniversary of its observance at UNESCO, this edition transcended the framework of a formal institutional gathering, emerging instead as a vibrant cultural platform where languages, artistic expressions, and worldviews converged.
More than 300 participants from diverse backgrounds, including diplomats, scholars, artists, and cultural figures, came together for the occasion, reflecting the growing global engagement with the Chinese language. Throughout the speeches and exhibitions, a central idea took shape: Chinese is not merely a means of communication, but a system of thought and a fully realized aesthetic tradition.

Among the speakers, Yang Xinyu, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of the People’s Republic of China to UNESCO, emphasized the singular nature of Chinese characters, describing them as the visual essence of Chinese civilization. Their uninterrupted continuity over several millennia makes them a rare phenomenon in human history. Each character, becomes a space where meaning, memory, and aesthetic expression converge.

This artistic dimension was echoed by Khondker M. Talha, President of the 43rd session of the General Conference, who observed that Chinese writing embodies a distinctive way of perceiving and interpreting the world. Far from being arbitrary, the graphic forms of Chinese characters reflect a refined observation of reality and a capacity for abstraction carefully cultivated over centuries.

From a historical perspective, Nasser Bin Hamad Al Hinzab, Chairperson of the Executive Board, traced the evolution of the Chinese language, from ancient oracle bone inscriptions to contemporary digital communication. This remarkable continuity highlights not only the vitality of the language, but also its enduring influence on modes of thought and creative expression.

A more philosophical perspective was offered by Lazare Eloundou Assomo, Director of the World Heritage Centre, who explored the relationship between humanity and nature. In his view, each character emerges from an ongoing dialogue with the natural world, embodying a timeless ideal of harmony that continues to resonate in today’s global search for balance.

Finally, the perspective of sinologist Joël Bellassen further enriched the discussion. He underscored the profound singularity of the Chinese writing system, the only ideographic system still widely in use today. Chinese characters, he argued, are far more than linguistic signs: they are symbolic forms that shape thought, preserve cultural memory, and nourish the imagination.
This richness was vividly expressed in the event’s two exhibitions. “ The Wisdom of Chinese Characters ” designed by Tsinghua University, offered an immersive journey into the graphic universe of Chinese script, reinterpreted through contemporary design. Bridging tradition and innovation, it revealed the structural principles, aesthetic logic, and creative potential inherent in Chinese writing.

In parallel, “ Art Within Characters: Seeing China ” , presented by the Nanchang Institute of Technology, offered a sensitive exploration of the connections between writing and craftsmanship.
Sculptures, ceramics, embroidery, and cloisonné works each expressed, in their own way, the spirit of Chinese characters embodying universal values such as happiness, harmony, and elegance. Through these works, visitors discovered a culture in which artistic gesture extends and enriches the meaning of the written sign.

Over the past five years, Chinese Language Day at UNESCO has established itself as a key platform for intercultural dialogue. In Paris, it serves as a powerful reminder that languages are not merely instruments, but living worlds.
Through its historical depth, visual richness, and enduring vitality, the Chinese language continues to act as a bridge across time, cultures, and human imagination.
