KIDILL: An Echo from the Past

 

 

For KIDILL’s Autumn-Winter 2025-26 Collection, Hiroaki Sueyasu is drawing on memories. The Harajuku district of Tokyo between the late 1990s and early 2000s was a veritable centre of expression for young people who were both rebellious and true to their tastes.

Fashion was infused with local culture, resulting in unique modifications to ready-to-wear garments and creative reinterpretations of second-hand clothes.

This dialogue transcended the boundaries of music, fashion, Tokyo and the world, weaving an aesthetic of the extraordinary fuelled by constant questioning.

Reflecting back on this period, Sueyasu realises that Harajuku culture, highlighted by publications such as ‘TUNE’ and ‘FRUiTS’, combined a rebellious spirit capable of generating alternatives with the charm of unusual individualities.

An Echo of the Past

 

The memory of those moments has left a deep mark on Sueyasu, and his Autumn-Winter 2025-26 collection echoes them, reinterpreting the past to reveal new meanings. The collaboration with ‘A STORE ROBOT’, a legendary Harajuku boutique founded in 1982 and a mainstay of the alternative scene for over 40 years, adds immeasurable value to this collection.

Renowned for acquiring the reproduction rights to Vivienne Westwood’s ‘Seditionaries’ designs, the shop has preserved the essence of punk culture over the years, a commitment that Sueyasu fully shares. This collaboration encourages her to redefine authenticity, reinterpreting it through the prism of ‘real’ and offering a fresh perspective on this fundamental notion.

A fusion of influences

 

The collection goes beyond Tokyo as a mere symbol; it also incorporates Sueyasu’s personal experiences and memories of London. It freely fuses influences from past and present, incorporating elements inspired by the rave and punk aesthetics of the London years.

Bold colour choices, striking contrasts in stitching, vivid touches in camouflage patterns and metallic coatings recall the intensity of contrast that reigned in Harajuku. Cyberpunk was also one of the major influences of the period.

该系列不仅将东京作为单纯的象征,还融入了末安对伦敦的个人经历和回忆。它自由地融合了过去和现在的影响,融入了受伦敦狂欢和朋克美学启发的元素。

An artistic collaboration

 

The collaboration with Brett Westfall, a Los Angeles-based artist with a shared taste in music and art, adds a new dimension to the collection. His naive drawings of strawberries, the dog ‘Snoopy’, punk kids and skateboarders blend seamlessly into the range of garments, from canvas trousers and quilted coats to sweatshirts, T-shirts, MA-1 jackets and ‘Kids Love Gate’ shoes. These illustrations create a unique alchemy, the fruit of a meeting between shared aesthetic universes.

KIDILL seems to sail through the ages, while remaining true to the spirit of its time, and so resists standardisation. The brand succeeds in creating a feeling of « new déjà-vu », where the homage to the eternity of what Sueyasu cherishes is not a simple nostalgic desire, but a questioning of the notion of « truth » in fashion.

With this autumn-winter 2025-26 collection, Sueyasu revisits the past to shed light on the values that have been handed down through the ages, while affirming a bold vision that is resolutely focused on the future.
