Among the institutions that contribute to the district’s cultural diversity, the China Cultural Center holds a special place. It creates a valuable link between France and China by promoting cultural and artistic exchanges, fostering a dynamic and enriching space for dialogue.

To learn more about the challenges and development of the arrondissement, Airs de Paris met with Josiane Gaude, First Deputy Mayor of the 7th arrondissement.

How would you describe your arrondissement?

The 7th arrondissement is one of the most prestigious areas of Paris. It is home to many exceptional landmarks, as well as several embassies and cultural institutions, including the Chinese Embassy and the China Cultural Center. It is also home to Les Invalides, as well as large green spaces such as the Champ-de-Mars and the Invalides gardens, which contribute to its charm and quality of life.

So you know the China Cultural Center quite well?

I have been visiting the China Cultural Center for many years, and I like to say that we share the same ground. Last year, we celebrated 60 years of Franco-Chinese friendship, with a number of important events that I tried to attend as often as possible, despite my busy schedule.

Chinese culture is also very popular among Parisians. Every performance I have attended has allowed me to see just how enthusiastic the audience is. China is a fascinating country, rich in an exceptional history and culture. Our two peoples are connected by many ties, and although our relationship has not always been straightforward, it remains strong and valuable.

Are you pleased with the presence of the China Cultural Center?

We are fortunate to have both the Chinese Embassy and the China Cultural Center in the 7th arrondissement. In recent years, the Center has grown considerably and has become an essential cultural institution thanks to the diversity of its events: exhibitions, concerts, performances, and more.

I saw this again recently during an exceptional concert, where talented Chinese artists captivated the audience. The atmosphere was remarkable, and some spectators told me that they had already traveled to China, which is evidence of the growing interest among French people in this rich and inspiring culture. The Cultural Center therefore plays a key role in strengthening the ties between our two countries.

How do you see the future of Franco-Chinese relations?

I am convinced that many opportunities lie ahead, both culturally and economically, to further strengthen our relationship. As elected representatives of the 7th arrondissement, we are at the heart of these exchanges and work closely with the Chinese Embassy and the China Cultural Center.

I had the opportunity to visit China about thirty years ago, and I hope to return soon. Unfortunately, last year, the Olympic Games, which involved our arrondissement so extensively, prevented me from doing so. However, the event brought our district into the global spotlight and opened up new opportunities, particularly in tourism. We have also seen a significant increase in the number of Chinese visitors in recent months.

The cultural closeness between our two countries is a precious asset, and it is our responsibility to preserve and strengthen it.

So tourism plays a key role?

Absolutely! The Paris Tourist Office confirmed to us that there has been a significant return of Chinese tourists, particularly since December. This is in line with expectations, especially following the impact of the Olympic Games, which had made certain journeys more difficult.

Today, we are seeing a major influx of visitors, particularly from China, highlighting the importance of tourism to our arrondissement. Beyond its economic impact, tourism also enriches cultural exchanges and helps strengthen the ties between France and China.
